Plant Select® is a program designed to seek out and distribute
the very best plants for gardens from the high plains to the intermountain
region. Plant Select® is a cooperative program administered by Denver Botanic
Gardens and Colorado State University together with landscape and nursery
professionals throughout the Rocky Mountain region and beyond.
Several
plants are chosen each year that thrive in the sunny, variable conditions of
Rocky Mountain Gardens. These can be plants that have grown here for years and
have not yet attained the popularity they deserve, known as
recommended plants.
Introductions represent taxa that
are discovered by our cooperators. Superior forms or hybrids carefully tested
over time are known as originals. Plant Select® is at the vanguard of a bold,
new plant palette that is revolutionizing the way we Garden. Here are plants
that thrive in both our variable winters and our hot summers. They are helping
forge a truly American style of horticulture.
One of the key characteristics of Plant Select® plants is
their adaptability to the semi-arid conditions of the Rocky Mountain and Western
plains region.
At Loveland Garden Center we carry a wide selection of the designated Plant Select®

Low growing drought tolerant native broadleaf evergreen shrub selected from

cinnamon-red to purplish exfoliating bark with bright glossy green leaves.
Waxy pink tinged white flowers appear in early spring followed by a dry red
berry in September-October. An excellent low ground-cover for a well drained
soil.

Introduction: This select strain of the
showiest of the northern Great Plains' penstemons was developed from the
Seeba hybrids by Mary Ann Heacock of Denver. It has giant flowers that range
from pure white, through lavender and rose-pink to a deep purple-violet. The
silvery rosettes are attractive all year. Short-lived on wet soils, it will
persist in buffalo grass or the xeriscape. Perennial.
